Ponta Delgada will be Portuguese Capital of Culture in 2026

The city of Ponta Delgada will get the title of Portuguese Capital of Culture in 2026.

This initiative was revealed on December 7, the day of the announcement of the European Capital of Culture 2027,  by the Portuguese Minister of Culture, Pedro Adão e Silva. According to the Minister, the country will have a Portuguese Capital of Culture annually, that will receive two million euros.

This event will be 'inaugurated' by the three finalist cities that didn't get the ECoC 2027 title – Aveiro, Braga and Ponta Delgada. These municipalities will get the title of Portuguese Capital of Culture between 2024 and 2026, by alphabetical order. After that, and from 2028 onward, the title will be awarded through an open call.

The Cultural Strategy Ponta Delgada 2030 was created alongside the European Capital of Culture bid. The candidacy team will be working until the beginning of next year to leave recommendations about the legacy of the bid, in consonance with the Cultural Strategy, to inform the construction of the Portuguese Capital of Culture. The event will be promoted by the Municipality that, in due time, will provide more information about it.
